Vendor Blog: Aosta, Italian Alps

No one knows their overseas home better than the owner so The Viewing invite guest blogs where owners can tell you directly what makes the location of their second home fantastic.

This week read why the ITALIAN ALPS has been such a great location for a ski home. As owners (and reluctant vendors) of a ski property in CERVINIA we want to tell you about the AOSTA VALLEY and why the region has more to offer than you would think. It has been our treasured corner of Italy for the past decade but now that we are selling we have decided to share with you the secrets of this beautiful valley.

First and foremost ACCESSIBILITY. You may be used to lengthy 3 hour transfers to many ski resorts, well fear not that is not the case here in Cervinia. Fly to Turin and transfer time is just 1 hour 15 and we love the fact that we can fly BA if we don't fancy a budget airline. Arranging buses and transport direct to the resort is not so easy so we typically hire a car.

HIGH ALTITUDE with the ski area reaching over 3000 metres, Cervinia is as snow sure as they come in the Alps. When our kids are on half term in October we often head over to make the most of the first lifts and pistes opening and we have been known to ski at the beginning of May on a Saturday to then drive down into the valley for lunch in the sun on Sunday. What a long season!

SUMMER is also fantastic in Cervinia, partly thanks to being able to walk straight from the door into the most untouched mountain landscape but also the fact that our property sits alongside an 18 hole golf course so the summer months are fabulous here too with golf, delicious Italian food and all the other summer mountain activities you can expect (cycling, rafting, climbing etc).

So what is there to see and do in the Valley, once you leave the resort of Cervinia? I expect you don’t know that Aosta city is the second most important site in Italy for ROMAN RUINS, after Rome that is. This makes the valley a real cultural hub with plenty of museums, festivals and sites to visit. And if you like medieval history too, the CASTLES scattered through the Valley are stunning.

So to explain how we found ourselves buying in Italy. We were first attracted to owning a home in Italy because we absolutely love the FOOD, WINE and LIFESTYLE as well as being keen skiers. Homing in on this Alpine area really gave us everything we wanted. We enjoy fabulous meals in the array of restaurants and we love our annual trips to purchase locally produced wines – yes there are some fantastic wines produced in the Aosta Valley which we buy directly from the vineyards during the summer months, which naturally has to include a tasting session!

This really is a wonderful region on every level - Cervinia gives us GLACIER SKIING and over 360 KM OF RUNS, the valley boasts four of the Alps’s highest peaks, all reaching over 4000 metres – these being Matterhorn, Mont Blanc, Monte Rosa and Gran Paradiso, and we keep finding more to discover both from cultural and culinary points of view.
